Protect Yourself With Travel Insurance

Posted on

When you travel, you may think that you do not need any extra insurance coverage. Your health and auto insurance will take care of anything that could come up and you won't have to worry. Some think that obtaining travel insurance will just be an extra cost that won't pay off. However, this is not true at all. People who travel without travel insurance quickly learn that the benefits outweigh the costs.

Airline Delays

If your plane is delayed for any reason, you will have to rebook your flight. With this usually comes rebooking fees and sometimes hotel stays to wait for the new flight. Some airlines may cover these expenses in a specific time frame after the delay, but others do not offer any reimbursement at all.

In addition to knowing what your airline's policy is on flight delays, you should purchase travel insurance that will cover these expenses. Read the policy so that you are covered in the event of a delay, regardless of a time frame.

Rental Car Damage

Most people insure their rental car under their normal auto insurance policy. This will save you a little money at first, but if you have to file a claim, you will be filing it against your normal car insurance. This means those rates increase.

If you get coverage for rental car damage with your travel insurance, you can file a claim with it and your car insurance rates won't increase at all. Filing the claim is usually easier with your travel insurance as well.

Medical Coverage

You should find out if your current health insurance will cover you when you travel. In most cases, you will need additional coverage.

Travel insurance has medical coverage that varies policy to policy. One good thing is that travel insurance covers injuries related to extreme sports and related activities while traveling. For example, if you break your arm while skiing in Aspen, your travel insurance will take care of your medical bills.

Travel insurance doesn't usually cover emergency room care unless you add the coverage onto your policy. Be sure to find out what you are paying for and add the additional coverage if you are traveling internationally.

As you can see, there are many situations in which your standard insurance policies just won't be enough to take care of you. Even in the cases where you are covered by your policies, using them will cost more money than having a separate travel insurance policy, like with Hermann Insurance Services Inc.
